Case proven methinks! 😏

?

EDIT: All by hand, I could easily write a macro that sent messages that could send hundreds a minute or more but well, effort.
A typical spammer is someone who tries to get a message to as many people as possible, I don't see a reason for them to go through the effort of writing a program just to spam one person. O_o

You'd be amazed at the lengths some people will go to piss off and inconvenience other people.

Yes, I can see the point, but I would then report you, you would be banned and I would delete the lot - no problem. [well ok a slight bit of aggro but then the spammer would be gone]

And how many of the eejit spammers would be capable of writing a macro to do it?

Do ex-subscribers have their limit reduced to 10. Strange if they do, cause they couldn't be spammers could they?
My account would be banned but I could register another account in minutes and be at it again.

Writing a macro? Simple. Send a batch of 20 using the method I did (open 20 tabs in Firefox, paste and send) while recording using a macro program making sure to finish the macro with returning Firefox to the starting state and then set it to play at a faster speed (limited by your internet connection) on repeat.

And ex-subs now have no financial investment in the site and it's no skin off their nose if they get banned. So they could spam the place up with no real repercussions (whereas subs lose the remainder of their subscription).

So someone who had been a subscriber here for say two years then stops subscribing, is limited to 10 PMs a day "just in case" he's turned into a spammer now he has no real investment in the site....lol.

There's also the fact that ex-subscribers are in no way differentiated from never-subs (such as yourself) in the code of the site.

How do you know that? Have been spamming as a side job, have you? Just kidding...and yes, I know some people go to great lengths just to piss someone off but those are few, what are the chances someone like that would be on this forum?

It's happened in the past so I'd guess a probability of 1.

Actually, I think the probability of it happening again would go down since it already happened once.

Well then you wouldn't know anything about probability.

Tell that to my stats professor...

If there is a low probability of something occurring, the probability of it occurring twice would be less.

That is true. HOWEVER, the fact that an unlikely occurance has previously occured does not reduce the chance of it happening a further time.

For instance, I won the lottery last week (1 in 10 million say), if I buy a ticket this week what are my chances of winning? Higher or lower than if I hadn't won the lottery last week?

The odds of 1 in 10 million is a constant, unless the odds themselves change. 😕

Exactly. The fact that I have previously won the lottery does not change the probability that I will win it again. Just like the fact that a person has previously been banned for spamming doesn't change the probability that in the future someone will be banned for spamming (assuming conditions stayed the same which they haven't but we were discussing the case of if they had).

If RHP went back to more than 10 PM's for the scums, someone would come back and abuse it very quickly. It's not a 1-100000000 chance, there are Trolls who already know how to do it and will do it again.

This rule is in place for a reason, and is not an instance of random chance. It was abused, and could be abused again.

Warnings don't help, bannings don't help. These are people who sign up and blast off pm's to a huge list of users. There was only one way to stop it, and that was a limit of 10 PM's a day.

This isn't the lottery where you might draw a number. This is a site where some people want to come in and make a new user name and send everyone here a PM about 'their topic'. It's bad enough they can do this with the forums. The forums have moderators who can stop it pretty quick, but PM's don't have moderators.

Let's say your solution is now only getting 10 PM's a day, rather than sending 10. You are still in the same boat, but now the troll can send 1000 pm's to 1000 users. That is why each scum can only send 10.

As for people making macros or programs to spam, they are a special breed. They either have a reason to do it, or want to emulate someone else who has done it. Either way, it happened time and time again... as crazy as those odds might seem.
