So it's this computer screwing up somehow.
Here's my 2 cents - if you ask about such problems on a chess website you will just get confusing answers from too many people with different opinions - some may be right but you won't know which ones, and you may even end up damaging your files.
Go the Microsoft hotmail support pages if you can connect to them, there should be a way of contacting an actual expert, via a structured form you fill in. Mention the other problems you have, they may have a bearing on the hotmail problem. Although they won't be interested in fixing those, you may find that when they tell you how to fix the hotmail problem, it solves your other problems as well.

My DSL modem is hooked directly to my computer. A few days ago I did switch from a router back to the modem (I had been letting someone else access the internet from their computer using my account). Could that cause a problem? Should I uninstall the Router program or whatever?

No1, most of the people here are so into their own psuedo knowledge and BS, that they will post advice without even knowing it is likely to be moronic. That's why they play chess.
However, conntacting Hotmail help could quite possibly be more frustrating. But I doubt it.
P.S. maybe this is a sign - get out and enjoy the world. Most people get too much digital these days.
