Look to see if, when you click About Internet Explorer on the Help menu, the Cipher Strength value is 0-bit.
If that is the case, have a read of this one.

128 is good - at least it's ruled that out.

Is your clock set to the correct time?
Make sure that the a.m./p.m. is correct, too.

If the computer's time is way off, many secure sites won't work correctly.

I hope he does, I happen to like reading his posts. If I could I would probably rec most of them.

1) While an ram upgrade would be nice I don't think it is your problem.
Low ram and your windows would probably freeze up and not function at all.

2) System restore is out of the question.

3) Changing browsers doesn't seem likely even though FireFox might be nice once you get your computer email issue solved.

4) I am not sure if you said you have a fire wall, but if you don't you needs one and if you do a firewall can cause some malfunctions and block things you don't want blocked. Might want to disable the fire wall temporarily to see if it helps.

5) Security settings are a possibility. Little buggers can change settings.

6) Shutting down and restarting may help but you probably already have.

7) Virus, Trojans, and spy-ware is a possibility. Very probable. Try downloading ewido, lavasoft and spybot if you haven't already. AVG is a good firewall.

8) Your Modem could be the problem too. I am leaning somewhere in this area. You might want to try your computer on someone else's Internet connection .

9) I have checked my hotmail and mine works fine right now which means nothing other than to say I have had more problems with hotmail than any other provider. But since there are other things happening on your computer. I would probably exclude the email provider as being the problem.

Some of diagnostic theories but who knows unless you are there to see everything.
One thing I know for sure computers can be a real bit.ch at times.

It could be spyware messing up your cookies.

Alternatively, if you open internet explorer, click on:

"tools", then
"internet options", then
select the "privacy" tab

Check that your "cookies" are not set to "block all cookies", a setting of "medium" or "medium-high" should do it. A "block all cookies" setting would explain why you couldn't log in anywhere.

I have AVG and it does a virus check whenever I start the computer. It says it's clean. I have Spybot and it says there aren't any problems. My security settings are set at Medium and I put it at Default settings. No luck.

I don't know, I am not a computer whiz and know close to nothing about routers (the only time I used one was when I had a friend visiting, and he set it up himself). But if the problems started at the same time, it might be a clue.

You can also do a quick check here to see if it is a secure sites issue.

Alright - I have read the thread and this is how I read the problem - let me know if I read it correctly.

-You have a connection issue with actually getting into your hotmail inbox, but are able to log into hotmail.
-You have an issue connecting to the AGEgames site for turnfile submission.
-You have cleared your IE cache, cookies and files
-You are running an Anti-virus application
-You have tried Firefox and getting a connection error.
-You have run the IE SP1 and this did not fix the issue.
-You have disconnected your PC from the router and are running the dsl modem straight to the PC.
-You are using Windows 98SE
-You are obviously having no issues with connecting to RHP, else you would not be posting here....

I have a couple questions:
-Are you having an issue connecting to any other websites?
-Are you sure that you have not changed anything else on the system? That includes the installation of ANYTHING (aside from that which you ahve installed in attempt to fix this issue) from a new background image to MS Office....

Your summary is correct.

No, as far as I can tell I'm able to go into any other website. I don't think I installed anything else last week; there's no new programs or anything on the desktop.

He does have problems sending longer posts or PMs, though. So I would say "no issues with connecting to RHP" is not entirely true.

Sending long posts to RHP is not a connection based issue. As stated in my post -
You are obviously having no issues with connecting to RHP

That statement is true.

As far as what could be your problem....As many computer geeks know (not something I would expect of you no1) - the registry houses a whole load of terrors.... it is possible that you have a corrupted registry key that is causign issue.

What I would suggest is an uninstallation of IE, then a reinstall of IE, then the IE SP1 patch. Hopefully this will clear any issue in the registry, though, the way Win9X works, nothing is a guarantee. Maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling your DSL software (if you have any) as well.

Well, as I said I am not a computer whiz, but how do you rule out that it's a connection based issue, and what else could it be? My reasoning was that when I have problems with my internet connection, I may be unable to post because the post doesn't get through, and this is more likely to happen if it's a long post because it takes longer to get through (although I guess the difference is rather small), so the connection needs to work longer.

Have you tried logging into your hotmail account from another PC?

Could there be a conflict in the device manager?
Right click My Computer Icon
Click on properties
Click on Hardware tab
Choose Device Manager and look for any conflicts.

Not sure if that is how you do it for windows 98se I can't remember.

One other thing you can do is use this diagnostics tool.
