Apparantly a pit bull killed a small girl yesterday and the news is covering other similar events, . A couple was walking in the woods with their labrador and 2 small children, a pit bull appeared out of nowhere and attacked their labrador which was severly hurt, the dog then went for the woman and the husband grabbed it and shouted for the kids to run, the dog got free and went after the kids, it was just about to get one of the kids which was screaming when the labrador realising the kid was in danger sacrificed itself and was mauled to death. The police said it took 3 bullets to stop the dog. I think I need to start carrying a weapon with me as I walk my dog in the middle of nowehere and if I need to help my dog I should have something that would instantly stop a dog (like a short iron bar) Does anyone know what the law is regarding carrying such things here in the uk?
Originally posted by stevetoddI don't believe that. Their labrador wouldn't "realise" the kid was in danger and therefore "sacrifice" itself. It's natural reaction would be to fight. If there was a dogfight on, the dog would get in on the dogfight. That's what dogs do. They don't think, when they hear that guttural growling and bone crunching and they smell the blood, they fight to the death, the labrador's number 1 enemy was the pitbull, the pitbull's number 1 enemy was the human. Labradors are easy to kill for pitbulls.

That guy must have had a number of opportunities, especially when the dogs were fighting each other, to put the pitbull in a choke hold or to break its legs by using his imagination. The best thing to do is wear good boots, grab a forearm, and bring your heel down as hard as you can on the head and jaw and ribs until it gives up, don't let go of that forearm.
Originally posted by hopscotchThe point is what is the law regarding carrying something such as a short iron bar? but for the record the only people at the scene said the dog was finished but made one last lunge only when their child was in danger, but as I said that was just the intro the question was about the bar. I don't think my labrador would be an easy kill for a pitbull with an iron bar being driven into its skull by me, I have to say I would make my labrador a strong favourite to win that one. In the wintertime I do wear steel capped boots so maybe I could cope without using something

you're supposed to turn your dog(s) in to get it "put down", like anyone is ever going to do that. *bye penelope we're just going to kill your dog now, see ya later, we can go out for ice cream* 🙄
Originally posted by trevor33Surely it must be illegal to own such a dog then? it's strange world we live in when you consider people are dying. I know people also die from drugs but I see that as slightly different to the mauling to death of a 5 year old girl (although there will be the odd drugs story of an equally innocent person I suppose)
nope, they've been illegal for ages but that laws enforced just as much as the soft drugs laws.
