yea, I was surprised about it too. usually the director's cuts and other nonsense just make the films worse. I suppose I liked it more because the original was more of your average box office hit war film, where as in the redux the war seemed almost irrelevant.

the redux could've happened on the late 19th century congo river just as well. 🙂
What I love about the film (redux or original) is that it seems to be about translating the absurdity of war onto the big screen. That it was in specifically in Vietnam is irrelevant in a non-historical perspective, as the film is a timeless anti-war manifesto.

The opening scene is one of my all-time favourite cinema moments...

The Wind that Shakes the Barley.

How this incredibly average film won the Palme d'Or is beyond me.

You know, I totally agree. I so wanted to love this movie since I have a big ol' 1916 tattoo and whatnot. It wasn't brilliant. It wasn't bad. But it wasn't brilliant. I was thoroughly annoyed. I tried to lie to myself for a while, but I felt dirty.

I always thought that Flesh Gordon was a big disappointment. I never believed that the Emperor Wang and The Penisaurus could be real (until I joined RHP....now I KNOW they are real...and writing in the forums)

Heres 3 of mine that let me down...

Spiderman 3
Alien vs Predator
Judge Dredd
I watched Spiderman 3 last night.

As someone who actually read the comics at the time the Symbiote first appeared, i have to say that i thought the film was great. Peter was portrayed as a bit of a douche, which i suppose he was (i haven't seen the other two movies), but that was kinda annoying......Hucks quick review......Cool film, the guy from the 70s show played a cool character, apart from the sickly sweet bits the effects rocked.

Must see if you remember the first Secret wars. (or were reading comics at that time).

I know it's a classic. In fact, I even know "why" it's a classic. And still I was disappointed.

Not even film of that year for me.
