"The listing of victims in this way began in 1952, and up until last year, 202,118 names had filled 69 books"
God Bless America
Granny
..the victim list is a negative one...the many who did not die from further japanese imperialist attacks...the japanese who did not die
defending the empire as we invaded...the americans who did not die
razing kyoto to the ground...let us remember the rape of nanking...the wholesale slaughter of the philippines...the death camps run by the "honorable japanese"...those who fell at pearl harbor...the japanese militarists raided the far east since the 1930's and they finally got what was coming to them...we killed more in the dresden fire drops in germany than died in japan....they got what they wanted...death for the emperor's honor...banzai !

Fair point about Dresden, that was an utter disgrace as well.

Originally posted by reinfeldThere was no need to invade Japan with the massive loss of live you talk about. They were a broken nation and naval blockades and conventional bombing would have ultimately brought it's surrender.
...don't care about the geneva convention...rather see millions live on all sides if it takes a few hundred thousand to die...
Cooking tens of thousands of civilians in a 3000 degree fireball was nothing more than intimidation of the Soviet's.
If the bombs had to be used it should have at least been demonstrated to the Japanese first without the target been a large civilian area.

These are all interesting points and the death toll at Dresden, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki were horrific, I feel horrible for the victims of those attacks. But, they were minor compared to the overall death tolls in that war.
Let's not forget who started that war.
God Bless America
We didn't start the fire.
It was always burning.
Since the world's been turning.
We didn't start the fire.
de de de de de de....
something, something or other......

we only had two bombs...and the japanese did not give up with the first bomb...we had to drop the second one before they decided that they had to surrender...the japanese had cruelly run all over asia from the 1930;s to 1945....they had to be stopped or they would have started again in the 1950's...the myth of imperial japanese militarism required a total PSYCHLOGICAL defeat which could only have been brought about by either HUMILIATION or total destruction...you don't understand the japanese if you think a naval
blockade was good enough...

Which was more destructive anyway, the bombings by conventional weaponry which caused huge firestorms because of the construction techniques and materials used in Japanese cities or a nuclear bomb?
What about what happen at Dresden? or was that bad too, even though it was war and the affected persons were Nazis?
