I live in a very "safe" and "crime-free" area as well. But I don't foresee myself ever shaking the feeling that anything can happen, anywhere, and it only takes one event to change your life forever. Chance happens.
I've never seen a bigger bunch of fraidy cats in my life. Is that why the American public insists on having the biggest military in the world....because you're all so afraid of the world??
No wonder your priests and pastors call you guys sheep.

In other news, a thunderstorm rolled through Denver last night. 27 sheep died of fright while 96 Americans shotgunned the sky aiming randomly at passing cloud formations...

I was only half as paranoid before I had kids.

Do you know how many kids were kidnapped last year in the US?
Do the math, and then come back and tell us why you think your kids will be one of the chosen few.
Originally posted by uzlessI sure don't know the statistics, and even if I knew the numbers, they'd not change my outlook. I don't really care how slim the chance is, there still exists the chance, so I'm not going to fail to take simple precautions that I can take, while still allowing myself and my kids a fairly normal existence. I'm not barring my doors, I'm locking them. What exactly is your complaint with people being cautious rather than careless?

Originally posted by uzlessActually, we aren't really afraid we just want to kill a scumbag for Christ. That's why I leave my doors wide open at night.

Originally posted by uzlessThe biggest threat to children's safety are actually the people they know. After that, females will often feel more unsafe than males and can report that they have been the victim of some lunatic a time or two. That's why SJ is cautious. Plus, she has kids. It makes sense.

Just wondering how many guns people keep in their house/truck/office?
I'm guessing there are lots more in the U.S. than other countries, but you never know.
Personally, I own a Smith & Wesson .38 revolver and the kids each have a .22 shotgun (they don't have access to unless they are target shooting or hunting) and my husband has a few handguns (2 or 3) that he keeps at the office.

Well, I'd like to make it clear that I'm not atm someone without a gun, who is going to run away, because they feel they need a gun to 'feel safe', as you may be implying, I do live in a very safe city, but I certainly wouldn't intentionally move to a city that I didn't feel safe in, that's what I mean really.
I can't imagine my current city changing for the worst though, it's very safe.
For the benefit of Sunburnt, in my house we usually keep the doors locked downstairs, but the windows upstairs are always kept unlocked, and often open, even during the night. ๐ Of course we'd feel safe with the doors unlocked, but it's a needless risk. ๐
