I'm with the ladies here...I would rather be safe and cautious than take the chance of someone abducting or hurting yourself or your family.
The only gun that I have for "safety" is the .38 and I would only consider using it if I were alone in the house and someone broke in. Even then, I would not shoot to kill, there are other ways to stop a person...kneecaps are very sensitive.

I sure don't know the statistics, and even if I knew the numbers, they'd not change my outlook. I don't really care how slim the chance is, there still exists the chance, so I'm not going to fail to take simple precautions that I can take, while still allowing myself and my kids a fairly normal existence.
