I think what surprises me most is how ignorant I am about everything concerning this court of yours. For an accused man, that's a mistake. He should never let himself be caught napping, never for a minute let his eye stray to the left, when for all he knows, a judge or somebody like that can be lurking somewhere to the right.
Originally posted by David TebbSee this is what I don't get, Dave - you've shown that Exy played pretty lousy chess when he first got on the site and did it on a fairly regular basis. Then he showed significant improvement. All that you'd need to show me is that that significant improvement was caused by using an engine preferably by showing me a number of games played at about the same time showing high matchups with a particular engine. Once I have that, I'm singing the praises of the Game Mods for getting rid of a cheat. But if you have such evidence I cannot understand how revealing it could possibly make it IMPOSSIBLE or even more difficult to detect cheats in the future; if they're really lousy players who start using an engine I don't see how that can be hidden.
Lol, sorry! I wish I could say more, but I've probably said too much already.

I think saying Exy was a top player here is an overstatement; the ratings here are based on quantity as well as quality and he had over 2200 games. My record against him is far better than against any player rated higher than 1800 except maybe dustnrogers. I'd rate his caliber of play has 1600-1700's but concede that his early games don't approach such a level. His explanations appear plausible (a long layoff, not taking the games seriously at the start, etc.) if not convincing. But the games I have don't show any solid evidence of engine use and you guys refuse to give us any reason to accept your assertions as fact. I've been the most vocal supporter of having an effective Game Mod system of anybody on the Site, Dave, but you've got to start accepting that if the community is going to avoid these pissing matches every time someone gets banned and is ever going to have faith in the system, you have to give us at least some specific conclusions that we can look at and say "Yup, they're right". The present state of affairs just is not working.

If we showed everyone our evidence, we'd also be revealing a great deal about our methods. We might as well pack in, because we wouldn't catch too many cheats afterwards. I'm pretty sure that none of the other chess sites on the Internet post their proof for banning engine users. Such information has always been regarded as highly sensitive and confidential. In fact I doubt that any of the others list the names of the people involved in the process. We're a little bit more accountable here than those other sites. Much good that it does us.
As a low-rated player, I'm insulated from this discussion. But I don't like your assertion "all the evidence we obtained is confidential". That's crap. If you're going to ban someone and cause injury to his reputation, then you damn well better be public about why you're doing it, and be very clear indeed in the process. It's no secret what ...[text shortened]... in accusing someone of cheating without proving it than showing potential cheaters your methods.

It gives me no great joy to complain about the present system, but I'm not doing it because I like the sound of my fingers on a keyboard (though it is soothing at times). The Site Admins are free to adopt whatever system they think is best and I'm free (so far) to voice my opinions regarding the matter.I fail to see how anything I've ever said would be a hindrance to catching and banning the blatant cheats presently operating.
We're not moving forward any quicker by getting burned by the guy who demanded we get cracking.
