It's a tragedy they didn't make it to South Africa. Most of the players are in their primes (Arshavin, Billy, Pavluchenko, Akinfeev, Zhirkov, Zyryanov,...). And with Hiddink's style of play they would've looked refreshing in WC. Unfortunately, Slovenia surprised them.

Who should I blame for the recent failure? If there's not enough competition for a place in the national team, two years is sufficient time for a downturn.
blame the players. i remember the first slovenia match in russia, they thought they had it won and feel asleep. 2 years doesn't make a lot of difference with the same coach. that's why i want england to hold on to capello 😉

Very, very tight play. If linesman, well positioned, did not see Villa offside he probably wasn't.
Nice video I found here, shows the offside and the linesman position and his perspective.

Turn your sound level down.

Why do these people always add ridiculous music to youtube football videos?

As I said before pretty tight. In real speed and from that angle no way offside is called. Benefit of the doubt should always operate. Even if he appears somewhat offside I don't see an advantage to Villa. Scored that goal on pure guts and hustle! Great video clip, though. Agree with you the music is horrible.

Quite frankly, I'm glad the linesman did not see it or the game might have ended up in a penalty shootout, the worst way to decide a match since it is such a crapshoot.

You think a refereeing error is better? 😕

I understand it was very tight and linesmen are human but to say you prefer that it stood is strange.

My apologies to spain. I clearly underestimated them. Did not think they were good enough to beat England, let alone Portugal.

Two countries without a cup victory will make it to the final four.

one might be spain

Only because I firmly believe that offense deserves the benefit of the doubt. Villa did not get a clear advantage, objective of offside rule. Quite different from the Mexico ref error or the one against England. Also I hate PK shootouts with extreme passion. I wish they would alternate five minute periods with one man down in extra time a la "power play" instead of PK's. You can't deny Spain was the better team!

I don't deny that Spain is and was a better team. Benefit of the doubt gives the linesman slack and so I'm not complaining about it. But that's a million miles away from saying you prefer that an irregular goal stood.

I'm sorry it came across that way. I don't want any team winning on what may be perceived as an unfair advantage. That really tainted Argentina's win and eroded support for their otherwise great team.

It's too bad the brackets drew Portugal and Spain so early. Portugal could beat anybody, but they lacked that tiny bit of offensive spark. Their D is one of the best I've ever seen and in fact I do not recall any team ever being eliminated with only one goal against. They are incredible in back.

The horrible error was that imaginary sendoff. Soccer needs a NBA style elbow rule. The current rule demands super human skill and denies natural physiology. Players bump. In this case I did not see the alleged elbow to the face of Spaniard. I also did not see any swelling or mark on the Spaniard despite his acting as if he had been hit. We need video review of dives, elbows and other such things to see if the there is evidence of acting. Suspensions for this are way more important than the ones for the piddly, ticky-tacky yellow cards.

That's impressive! Too bad they also did not score that many goals. Portugal at least scored quite a few. Also I meant in second round. Swiss were eliminated in first round!

Swiss got eliminated in the second round in 2006 by penalty shoot-out to Ukraine. The game ended 0-0.

I stand corrected. You are right. Make that twice teams allowing fewest goals fail to move on to quarter finals.

Germany is cutting up Argentina's defense so easily. They could have had 2 or 3 already.
