More than 10% of SSA employees are being laid off as a reduction in force effort. Maybe some of them are unnecessary but expect there will be longer wait times and increased fraud.

Yes, reduction in work force all the way across the government, which is part of the doge program to save money for our country. You seem to imply that everyone will have the window shut when they apply for benefits. Which is to say that you are saying they will not get benefits. You can stretch it a little bit more and just say that everybody in the government is just gonna go home.

I volunteer to help chronically disabled people, so I go with them to the SS office to try to navigate the process. Let me tell you what it was like BEFORE Trump decided to cut SS staff.

1st rule: Don't be in a hurry because this will take 2-3 years. Many people hire a lawyer because IF they qualify, payments are retroactive. The lawyers "price" is the 2-3 years of accumulated payments that *should* have been paid to you but which the lawyers pocket.

2nd rule: Don't call. Show up in person. Calling will get you in a muddle. Answers from different staff will vary. When you show up, you won't have the forms you need, but trying to get a straight answer over the phone is hopeless. If you are illegal - forget it. You won't get anything.

3rd rule: The line is out the door from 7:30am. Rich, white millionaires who are there to collect "what they are owed" are a special category and will get called quickly. Your wait is 3 hrs minimum - only to be told 'Nope.'

4th rule: You will be expected to prove you don't have assets over $2000. If you and your finance each have $1500, don't be married because then your combined assets will be over $2000 and your benefits will be instantly terminated. The $2000 threshold was set in 1979 and does not increase with inflation. In 2150 when $2000 is the price of a cup of coffee, the limit will stilll be that.

5th rule: DON'T have a Special Needs Trust. Just don't. Give the money away, close the account. Trust me on this. It's a year delay minimum while they ponder whether or not you are a drug lord.

But with staff reductions? Hoo boy.

That's the the whole point: cut benefits people are entitled to by MAKING THEM GIVE UP TRYING!

I've been on SS for 12 years. I don't even recall applying in the office because it was so quick and easy.
I recently took an 80 year old that just relocated back to the US after living in Canada for the last decade and they had to verify her ID, mew address, etc. . My wife and I took her to the office, she was in and out in under 20 minutes.
I don't believe your story about the millionaires having their special line or that people are standing in line for 4 hours..

First, 880 BILLION off Medicaid, then another THREE hundred billion off Snap, food stamps, child care, and FOUR TRILLION added to the national debt UP front for no other reason than they KNOW they need to replace the money the tax bribe will lose so what else, BORROW it, make the national debt FORTY TRILLION. No big deal, right? Interest alone at 1.6 TRILLION a year,
But how it will effect SS? There is a rule, deficit spending will FORCE big cuts to entitlements like SS and SS ALONE will have a forced cut of a HALF TRILLION DOLLARS.
So tell me again how SS won't be effected.

Reductions in force are designed to make things smaller, not to make the more efficient. Eliminating inefficiencies would first need to identify where those inefficiencies are, but doge never did that. They just cut. You seem to agree with me and other posters here that social security has been cut.

That is incorrect. The way that POS budget reads it will lead to massive deficit spending and there is a law on the books REQUIRING spending cuts and one already targeted will be a half TRILLION dollar cut in SS.

I am not much with 2nd guessing a cadre (people trained in a specific profession) of experts who have arrived at the decisions that they have. It is OK here on the Forum to bat it around, but I will go with the experts.

Here is an article that SS can be applied for online, so I cannot even understand all these posts saying differently. All the more reason to trust our elected officials.
