At the end of 2025, I think China is winning. As you and some others might know, the PRC recently introduced legislation in support of what had already been a decades-long interest in increasing national literacy. There are a few articles (with some overlap in content) on SCMP (South China Morning Post) for any who might be interested.
As for me, I am not Han in this life and only know about 160 words in simplified Chinese, plus I don't have enough money even just to visit China for a few weeks to see some of its libraries and book stores, modern towers and ancient canal towns, to enjoy the cuisine, and even just to be in China.
This causes a different but similarly strong pang in my heart that the Mars we know about is not the Mars of former dreams and magazine fiction.
