Abba are the musical equivalent of washing your mouth out with soap.
ABBA are rock and roll gods and goddesses.
For example:
Sex Pistols reunited for 1 million $.
ABBA were offered 1 billion $... and refused!
That's art. That's rock and roll. That's cool.
Now, you go back to beating off to Boyzone or whatever has damaged you and leave music to the people who really know about it!

I believe the real difference is that if you examine the songs considered "good" over a long period of time, you will weed out songs that got catapulted to high consciousness because of trendiness. You should also be able to eliminate the more subtle effect of changes in taste over the years. However, you may have to deal with the possibility that no piece of music survives in rotation long enough to be considered good.
Many years ago, I had a discussion at Uni with a Classical fan who both wrote and played (two String & three Wind).
We discussed Beethoven v Frankie Goes To Hollywood, who were very big at the time.
Needless to say, I was pwnd.
What left an indelible mark on me was the comment he made regarding longevity of music, where he maintained that if there were no electricity, "modern" music would simply die out without the instruments to re-create it.
So I go with what stands the test of time too....even if I do, and will continue to, derive some pleasure from short-lived examples of modern music.

Art? Rock and Roll? Cool? A jedi craves not these things.
Originally posted by PBE6Ha, no one said that people today actually know what good music is!
This is paradoxical considering that we've been working with the assumption that consensus over long periods of time dictates objective goodness. Classical music enjoys a market share of about 5%. If no one's listening, what makes all the songs so amazing?
In fact, a 5% market share seems to prove that!
😉
My musical library includes Classical Music......hehe

Of course the 1 billion dollar story is hard to believe. Anyone with any respect and knowledge of music would offer 10 billion to see ABBA reunite!

I can guarantee you this :
Go into any pub, club, party or other social gathering, fire up Dancing Queen and people will still sing alongat the tops of their voices and dance however badly to it....
There can be only two reasons for that :
1. It's good. or
2. Everything else since has been bad.
2. certainly isn't true.....

And quite rightly too!
Don't mind Starrman, secretly he loves ABBA and T-REX. One day he'll come out of the musical closet and join us as we hold hands and sing:
La laa la laaaa die laa da...
La laa la laaaa da die laaaaaa....
