After another brilliant round of the RHP Photography Competition (Thread 42170), it's time to get ready for the next round, "Extended Exposure"! The deadline for entering is Friday, 26 May. I may extend it if people need more time, so let me know if you would like to participate, but can't make it in time.
In the "Still Life" round I had planned a non-voting section for pictures people didn't want to be part of the competition for some reason (e.g. because they had more than three pictures, or the pictures didn't fit the category well enough), but which they wanted to put up for viewing and discussion. Nobody made use of this, but you have this option again in this round. Pictures in that section will be displayed on the same page, but people won't be allowed to vote for them. It's entirely up to you to decide which pictures you want to have in which section (voting / no voting), as long as you don't send more than three pictures for the voting section. Send your entries to rhpphotocomp@gmail.com , together with the following information:
* Title
* Comment: Advanced editing, for example removing or adding objects, use of special effect filters or major colour adjustments, must be mentioned. Other comments, for example details about the equipment and settings, basic editing or some background info on the picture, are optional, but encouraged. If in doubt whether something is basic or advanced editing, just ask, or even better, simply give a little more information than absolutely necessary.
* Your RHP nickname (that won't be revealed before the round is over)
* Which section the picture should be in (I'll assume it's for the voting section unless otherwise stated)
Please keep the file size under 200 kB, and the picture shouldn't be bigger than 1024x768 (I'd suggest 800x600).
The pictures will be displayed on my webspace. You can choose to have your pictures removed when the round is over. You can also choose to leave them there, but have your name (real name or RHP nick) added.
If you are new to the competition, you might want to have a look at previous rounds: Thread 38433 (Comp History), Thread 37850 (Humour), and Thread 39665 (Chess).
If you have further questions, ask them here or send me a PM.
I'll post an updated list of upcoming rounds in a separate post.

Here's an updated list of upcoming rounds. There have been so many suggestions that I could only include a small part of them - it will take about a year to get through all these rounds, and I don't think it's useful to plan further ahead. This is just a proposal - if you don't like my choices, please speak up (but don't hit me)! I haven't included another "Still Life" round (as Ragnorak suggested) because the feedback to that suggestion has been mixed, but again, if you'd like to see another "Still Life" round (possibly right after this round), speak up!
15. Movement / Motion
16. Home (can be in your home, or just in the locality that you would regard as home)
17. Flowers
18. Words / Letters
19. Advanced Editing
20. Blue
21. Red
22. Yellow
23. Landscape
24. Abstract
25. Architecture
26. Glass

I think I'm in but would like to comment on the proposed up and coming rounds. I sort of think that "Motion" is a little too similar to "extended exposure" as most extended exposure shots will be of some kind of motion.
I also noticed there was a humour round some time ago. I would love to have a go at one of those!
Anyway, thanks for all the effort you put into these.

As for the proposed future rounds, I would like to propose to switch a few of the 'colour rounds' around with some of the other subjects mentioned in the still life thread. Of course the coulours differ, but I see them as similar assignments and I think having three rounds like this in a row is a bit too much of the same thing. Just a suggestion though.

I am sorry you missed the Humour round. I am afraid there won't be another one any time soon, unless several more people ask for it. It was not one of the most popular rounds, and I had difficulties getting enough entries.
Originally posted by DdVI see your point. I thought it would be fun to have them successively because it might bring out the similarities and differences better, but you may be right that it would be too much. Maybe we could do a round for all three colours, but present them separately, and people could vote for each colour separately plus an overall winner, or something like that?

By the way, has anybody else seen Kieslowski's film trilogy "Trois couleurs - Bleu / Blanc / Rouge" (the colours of the French flag)? Great films, and it's interesting how he uses the colours.
Originally posted by PeachyHm, I am not sure what you mean by "cheerful subjects". Any examples?
And I think we need to think of some more cheerful subjects rather than all these arty ones..
I also would like to have a round involving our reality, day to day life, and hassle and bussle around us.
Doesn't "Home" involve our reality and day to day life?
Originally posted by NordlysYup, good plan.

I also agree with DdV's point about the colours rounds.
I just wrote a long paragraph questioning the Home round, but while writing, I started coming up with concepts, and now I'm really looking forward to it. Nobody touch it! 😉
I'd really like to see some of the other rounds sooner, and I've just had a brainwave. Why not ask Russ to set up a vote for us to decide the choice and order of the new rounds? We could set it up so that everybody voted for their favourite 7 rounds. Then order the top 7 according to number of votes received, and then we can set up a new vote to chose the topics after those 7 rounds. If we only advertise it in here, then we should have mostly interested parties voting.

Originally posted by RagnorakThe only thing I really care about is *not* shooting the exact same round (like Still Life) shortly after it's finished. I would prefer to have the color rounds broken up/spread out, and I wouldn't mind the motion round pushed back since it so closely resembles this round. However, those two things won't bother me nearly as much as shooting the same round within a short timeframe would.
Yup, good plan.

Originally posted by NordlysExcellent idea! It would be like a miniature "26 Things" (http://www.sh1ft.org/26things/) , AKA "3 Things". I like the suggestion for the scoring, keeping it simple. So, you're saying that each person only posts 1 photo per colour. That seems fine as well.
Maybe we could do a round for all three colours, but present them separately, and people could vote for each colour separately plus an overall winner, or something like that?
For a little addition, why don't we total the 3 votes for the individual photos and have a "Photographer of the Round" as well as the "Photograph of the Round" as well as the individual colours of the round.
In fact, now that I type it, why don't we do that for every round? For example, I get 5, 5 and 8 points for my three photos, that means I get 18 points in the Photographer of the Round table.
Its been in the back of my head that entrants who only submit 1 photo get rewarded over those who submit 3, so with the Photographer of the Round, then its an incentive to enter 3 photos rather than 1.

My suggestion was for the new rounds, which will probably be 4 or 5 months away anyway. Why not get the rounds that the majority want to do. The vote isn't going to slow us down in anyway.
But as always, democracy rules here, so if I'm on my own, no worries. 🙂
