Originally posted by ChrisThere are no rules against how many pitches a pitcher can throw but you rarely see a starter go well over 100 these days unless it's one of the aces.
So is that because they want him to keep him from injury, or because the rules state that only a certain number of pitches can be thrown by each pitcher in the series?
Typically, you'd want your starter to go 7 or 8 strong then have your bullpen close the game out. Overworking your starting pitcher can be very disasterous. Good closers throw very hard for only an inning or two whereas a starter can throw hard for longer but start to die out and lose some stuff on their pitches by the 90th pitch or so...
Was it the first game of this series where the Cards tried to get a full game for their rookie? I guess if he could have pulled it off he would have been one of only 4 or so rookies to pitch a full WS game.
I gess they pulled him in the 9th after 2 runs were scored and he couldn't get anyone out. This was after 90 pitches, too bad he couldn't finish it up.

23 consecutive scoreless postseason innings for Rogers. This has been one of the greatest postseason pitching performances of all time. Four more innings and he'll tie Christy Mathewson. Amazing. Craig Monroe hit his 5th homerun of the postseason, and Rollercoaster Jones gets a nail biting save.
Originally posted by rwingettI'm just teasin' really, cowboy, but you must admit that it seems a little bizarre. Obviously Rogers is a great pitcher and the "substance" didn't affect his game whatsoever, but watching some stuff on ESPN.com, they were highlighting stills from previous games where you can see tiny brown streaks on his pitching hand in the exact same spot. Should this be a non-issue?
Yeah, right. The inning he was "cheating" he gave up two baserunners. After he washed his hands he allowed three more over the next 7 innings.

Edit: I see Plabibit beat me to the punch on that one.

Seriously, when you have the same substance on your hand in the same exact spot on your hand for the division series, the AL championship series, and now the world series... cmon now, its not a coincidence.

Originally posted by darvlayThat type of speculation just doesn't interest me. Did he have a 'foreign substance' on his hand? Did he not? I don't know, but it's a moot point now as the game is in the record books. If the umps had decided he was doctoring the ball, they should have ejected him. They didn't do so, so that's the end of the story as far as I'm concerned. Everything else is just idle speculation.
Boy, you could do PR for the Tigers with that answer! They should have you fielding the questions instead of ol' Brownhand.
Now let's see how closely the media scrutinizes his hand if the Series goes to game six.
