Just today this fella came up to me and handed me a line. Now, I knew right away what he was after. So I listened and gave him a few bucks. You know what he said then? He said "God bless you".

He was one of the little people. They are everywhere. And every time one of them asks me for something I give them enough for a meal. And every time I hear the same words, "God bless you".

I do it just to hear those words.

But they are the little people. They have little education or sophistication or culture. They are ignorant of so much I take for granted. Yet they each have an innate sense of something bigger than themselves. I can see it in their eyes. They are desperate yet are holding on trusting for even the smallest thing to get them through to the next day. I know they are trusting in God for their next meal. They have to. So they turn to me and others too. They don't expect God to miraculously appear and give them everything they need at once. No, they rely on others to help them in their humbled state. It must be how God is working in this world today. I can think of no other way.

It is through those of us who have something to give that God is showing Himself to the world. And it is through those who need our help that God is showing Himself.

The little people look like fools and so do I. But I'd rather be and look like a fool than miss out on hearing those words.

God bless you.

Thank goodness god gave us a world with such massive inequalities in wealth, so he can have that opportunity to show himself to us. I guess we shouldn't try to eliminate poverty or we just wouldn't have those opportunities.

See? I knew you were out there.

It wasn't God that gave us such massive inequalities rwingett. What ever gave you that idea?

And whoever gave you the idea that we can eliminate the inequalities? Obama?

But I agree with you. We have enough to eliminate inequality.

So what's stopping us?

A very nice post.

In an athiest world people would just say 'Bless You' and make it sound
as though you just sneezed.

Perhaps in this multi cultural world we should say;
"May your God Bless You."

But then the listener might say "But my God is your God."
and before you know where you are you have an argument on your hands.

(I see one has started already and the thread is only 3 posts old.)

So a simple "Thank You." will suffice.

Thank You.

Conservatives. They are the ones defending the interests of the rich and promoting income inequality. They make the baby Jesus cry.

Why would people say "Bless you" in an atheist world? I can assure you they would not.

That's just another talking point.

But valid.

Still, there must be a way to really do it. I don't think there will be a political solution though. They are all corrupt.

Yes, because blessings are a purely theistic aspect.

'Bless You' following a sneeze is a very old expression.
It means 'Health to You'.

They hope the sneeze is not the start of a cold or something more sinister.

So in my athiest world 'Bless You' would be acceptable.

Gesundheit.

So, rwingett, what's your point?

Do you think that what was happening on that occasion somehow has relevance to what is going on in the world today?
