What did Jesus mean by this?

Mark 10:17 “As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. ‘Good teacher,’ he asked, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ ‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No one is good – except God alone. You know the commandments: Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’ ‘Teacher,’ he declared, ‘all these I have kept since I was a boy.’ Jesus looked at him and loved him. ‘One thing you lack,’ he said. ‘Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ At this, the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.”

Was he saying that he was a Republican?

So what was Jesus saying when he objected to being called good, and do you consider yourself to be a good person?

I don't consider anyone good besides God, including myself. As a matter of fact I think our
nature is so broken we have no idea how bad we truly are.

It is only Christians who dwell on this issue of who is good and who is not. It is a non issue. Just get on with your lives and follow the commandments of Christ instead of asking the dumbest questions imaginable. Jesus knew that church people are selfish greedy and they help nobody in distress. The Good Samaritan story was about a GOOD man who helped people in need. That is what GOOD is about. GOOD is doing good works. The priest and Levite were BAD people who will not get eternal life in the Kingdom of God. The GOOD Samaritan will get eternal life.

Good and righteous people will enter the Kingdom of God. Maybe you and your type of Christian think there are none but Jesus knows them. If you are not in that group it does not mean nobody else is good enough for Gods Kingdom

    1 John 1:8
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

    1 John 1:10
If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

    Who is good but God?

Good does not mean no sin. Good means righteous.
There are righteous people who follow the commandments.
These people Christ will call into the Kingdom of God.

Dont know why you are quoting those irrelevant passages.

"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone. -- Mark 10:18, NIV

So if, according to you, good means righteous, then are you saying that what Jesus said is that no one is righteous, except God alone?

That contradicts what you just said, doesn't it?
