I don't know where you got that idea.
And what are you doing rummaging around in my head?
Beware! ... it's a scary place for you with lots of ideas and knowledge.
...unlike the States you will end up in prison if you
shoot someone on your property.

And by your own admission
Some groups in the US have set up a defense fund for helping people who have discharged a weapon
which implies not everyone goes to prison.
This is what I actually posted:-
In fact the law in NZ and UK prohibits excessive force
and unlike the States you will end up in prison if you
shoot someone on your property.

I wasn't kidding when I said if you kill him he won't learn anything.
Originally posted by @wolfgang59The US of A obviously hasn't yet reached the level of enlightenment you folks enjoy in the peace loving countries you mentioned. We were getting there with nationalised health care and pitting various groups against one another in the name of unified diversity. But you know what gosh darn it, somehow Trump slipped past Hillary when she wasn't looking and now things have taken a turn for the better... for us, not for you. But don't despair, we'll probably get back on a downward track again in 2024 or 2028... or 2032.

Hey, it could start happening again...we just need to be patient.

Like I said, as a rule thieves usually try to avoid any contact with the people they're robbing. The fact that I was staring straight into the petty thiefs face as I was talking to him was enough to convince him to move on to greener pastures... meaning he probably did not give up on stealing stuff, but he knew better than to be caught stealing from me a second time.
never mind the dog

-Removed-What I said to him was pretty much what I might say to one of my sons if I caught one of them doing something wrong. He appeared to be in his late teens or early twenties, and rode a bike through my neighborhood once or twice a day. He didn't appear to be a hardened criminal, but rather an opportunistic petty thief who looked for small items he could quickly snatch up and ride off with.
I didn't need to say much, because the fact that he got caught in the act seemed to unnerve him... so as far as having an impact or profound effect is concerned that alone was probably enough. My intuition was telling me he was intelligent and somewhat organized, but he was also very insecure. So there was no reason for me to come across like a bad*ss... he was sufficiently frightened by the encounter, so I let it go.
As far as I know he hasn't been back here, or been seen riding his bike through my neighborhood.

I don't know. I usually improvise in situations like that.

Originally posted by @fmfIf I had a gun then yeah. I would point it at him and tell him to gently set the TV down and get the hades out of my house.
Would you threaten the man with your gun in order to get your TV back?
Anyone with half a brain would be able to interpret that as "He's willing to let me leave, so I'll do as he says and gently set the TV down". If he's too stupid to realise I'm willing to let him go and keeps on walking, then I would probably fire a warning shot.
And if that didn't work, then I don't know...

Originally posted by @ogbYeah, but then you have to get rid of the body and make sure there are no other witnesses.
shoot to kill. you dont want a wounded burgler to sue you ! then clean out their pockets for cash !!
And yes, I know what you're thinking. It's a huge pain in the behinderbottom to be robbed and then sued by the robber, but an even bigger pain trying to get rid a body and clean up the blood and getting rid of this little clue and that one, and then you know what?
That's right, you can still get nailed for offing that stupid pain in the keester robber!
It's like paying taxes. You pay the exorbitant tax or you'll end up paying more for not paying the exorbitant tax.
Sheesh!
