The downside of lazily not writing a new post and referring you to an old thread, is that I used the arm bears joke there as well. 😞

Good for you, Nyxie. Do everything you can to avoid becoming a victim. But don't dismiss handguns so quickly. They are designed for close range self-defense from humans and humans are easily the most dangerous animals in the world. And in almost all cases the only time you have a legally justifiably right to defend yourself with a gun is at very close range.
Originally posted by StarrmanYes Starrman, I understand full well the murderous capability of 'sane' people.
You seem to be suggesting that only mentally unstable people murder. This is not true, the vast majority of people with mental health conditions are more a danger to themselves than they could ever be to others. By far and away the most ...[text shortened]... e extent that it furthers the segregation of people who need help.
I would also argue that anyone that could murder another human is not fully stable, wouldn't you?
Originally posted by DelmerI do not dismiss them, I choose not to own them for the reason stated. I also mentioned wild animals. If a bear were to wander into my yard, I don't think I'd get that close.

People, citizens like you and me, should not be allowed to bear arms.
The monopoly should be in the hands of police and military, democratically controlled by the people.

Unfortunately, the economy comes before children's (any citizens) lives. Also, having a gun and violence loving nation helps when you want to engage in illegal wars to safeguard your economy in the long term.
There will be no dramatic change in laws anytime soon.

1) Do you not agree that the u.s. government (people? ) rate economics above it's citizens' lives?
2)Do you not agree that the american people are a gun loving nation?
3)Do you not agree that the illegal war (and resultant theft of the 2nd largest oil reserve in the world) in Iraq atm is going to safeguard the u.s. economy in the future when the world is brought to a complete stand-still due to lack of oil?
I won't even comment on your remark about Northen Ireland. Its amazing how much ignorance can be contained in that one short sentence.

2) Yes we like the ability to defend our homes.
3) If the United States truly wants to (which I doubt) steal the 2nd largest oil reserve in the world and the world is brought to a stand still due to lack of oil. I suggest you move here or learn to pedal a bike.
One ludicrous statement deserves another I guess.
Are you saying that the IRA doesn't target British soldiers in Northern Ireland?

I personally think that people have the right to defend themselves. I believe handguns are the most effective weapon to defend yourself and your family in emergency situations. I don't own one personally, but I think people should be able to.
The US is an unduly violent country, but I do not think that gun ownership makes it so. The percentage of people owning guns in Canada is about the same as the US, yet their violent crime rate is far lower. The incidence of high rates of crime in the US are due to a myriad of causes and even if I believed that the availability of guns somewhat increased the crime rate, I would still feel that the government shouldn't be able to say people can't have weapons to defend themselves with.

The war in Iraq is an illegal war due to the fact it is an unprovoked war of aggression. Just because the u.s. shows a complete disregard for international law, doesn't make it any less so.
We should all be paranoid about oil. It won't be there in a few years. I guess that oil won't be a viable source of energy within 10 years, 20 at most.
As for the economics over lives question. You are sadly deluded my good friends...
1) Why did the Colorado Department of Health raise the danger levels of plutonium by a factor of 10 after finding dangerously high levels on lawns in Denver, close to the federally owned nuclear arms manufacturer at Rocky Flats. Why was a new law passed at the same time prohibiting studies of plutonium workers anywhere in the states by the DOE?
2) Why does the current government allow credit card companies to write bankruptcy reform bills which favour wealthy people and crushes ordinary people? http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2005/03/16/democrats_asleep_at_the_wheel/
3) Why hasn't the u.s. government signed up to the Kyoto Protocol, despite obvious signs of weather change along with deaths in the u.s.? Because it would hit the economy.
4) Why has bush exempted oil companies from the clean water act? Because its good for the economy. Screw the people who die from drinking contaminated water for years. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2003/10/13/MN44091.DTL
I could go on, the list is near endless. In case u didn't notice Chancre, I had the american people followed by a question mark, solely because the government is representative of the people.
Just as an aside, I have only ever seen 1 socialist paper in my life. I have never read any communist books. Get over it. Your debating style is crap Chancre, you can't put two posts together in a debate without getting abusive and resorting to name calling. Sucks to be you.
