We ARE allowed own guns in Ireland. The police force IS NOT armed.

No, the guns are for hunting purposes only. As such they are locked in a gun safe. If somebody was to come into my home (highly unlikely) I wouldn't have time to open the safe, assemble the gun and load the cartridges. That is because I really do 'carry'. Not just talk about it. If you know anything about us wyoming cowboys at all... you will not be surprised to hear that the 'concealed' part is a lot of hooey. Why conceal it? It is the great maker of civilization. Without the gun... we would all still be apes fighting over bananas.

I'm more pragmatic viewing society i guess. Wish I WERE more idealistic. Wash. D.C. has the strictest gun laws in the country, also the highest murder rate. How do the two coexist?
I do not expect to be attacked, however I do wish to be prepared. The threat of being shot by homeowner will deter most burglars. Rack the slide on a 12 gauge pump in a silent house and there is NO DOUBT what it is. I would leave said homeowner alone.
