How do you react to these threads? Do you show him you are indeed shocked by the situation or not? Just ignoring him can (maybe) be a solution.

He's impossible to ignore.

What do your parents do about it? Or does he only do it when they are not around?

This is quite serious indeed.
How come he behaves like that?
Does he have a behavioral problem like ADHD or something or is he just plain violent?
You're right not to let him just step over you

Mainly, he is making me miserable.
Double standards, constant insults, purposely going out of his way to annoy me, etc.

He has made several threats, threats of violence, there has actually been fights between us, he has on several occasions threatened to stab me as well.
I understand. And he's 6 years old, correct?

I tortured my little brothers. They in turn became psychologically maladjusted and had deeply troubled childhoods. Anyway my point is ... umm ... I'll get back to you on that one.

He is 19 as I mentioned earlier.

Mainly when they are not around, though my parents know that he is really irritating to me.

I sometimes wonder that myself, nothing wrong with him 'medically' though.

Does he do it to others, or just you? If he does it to others, he's just a bully by nature. If he does it only to you, it could be his way to feel important and get attention (in a very negative way that is).

Well, I'm unsure, I would assume he does it to me the most.

n.b. I guess it is worth mentioning that he is very racist (+ homophobic) as well.

Yes, not much luck. 🙁

They said the next time you have a fight with him that you should call the police...well, I think a restraining order would be a better idea instead.

OK, you seem to be suffering here.

A legal solution is far from ideal. Restaining orders and injunctions are the last resort, even if you feel you are already 'there'.
I will not patronise you by pretending to be some sort of psuedo counsellor, but do you understand why your brother acts this way?
Calling the police (your parents advice) is something you must do if ever in danger, but consider what you expect the result to be. It may act as a watershed by making your brother realise he has crossed the line. It may equally provoke the situation. The police may well not 'do anything' other than try to mediate, unless he has done something significantly criminal. Do not let this dissuade you from calling if he really steps out of line. In my experience being arrested can often bring home that someones behaviour is completely unacceptable.

A restraining order is normally applied in the most serious cases, post-conviction for a harassment / violence-related offence. Civil injunctions are a more common route, but you will need to speak to a solicitor and see if you qualify for financial assistance. If you co-habit this seriously complicates things (restraining orders and injunctions are designed to keep applicant and recipient apart)

My advice is not to go down this route yet. If your brother will speak to you at all, try and get someone who you both respect to act as mediator. You are brothers and this is the common ground you have to build from.
If he will not speak to you, write to him laying out why it upsets you so much. Do not threaten or accuse - tell him in your own words why it is seriously getting you down. By writing he cannot shout you down, or change the subject - you get to make your point.

If you genuinely can't make this work, you can PM me. I can get you some assistance if you really need it.

That sounds like what brothers are for. I suggest calling him out. Punch him in the ear - that sh** hurts. I know because my younger brother did it to me. Threatening legal action just makes you look like the gay relative... I know because when I punched my brother in the jaw he tried that crap and my family backed me.

Edit - or listen to Policestate - he said some smart stuff...
