As there isn't actual evidence about what precisely happened... The evidence that I use is that Saul of Tarsus, who formerly persecuted Christians and apparently was responsible for some of their deaths, rapidly became the most revered teacher in Christianity, and the foremost authority on it. He advanced the cause beyond everyone else.
If you accept that Christ is God, and you accept that God inspired the people and chose the proper ones to carry on the message, then there is an article of faith here where we accept the story about Paul because our traditions are accurate and God would not allow them to be corrupted by a single person.
