The Tea Party is claiming a big victory in Texas as Tea Party candidate Ted Cruz has just crushed Rhino David Dewhurst by 14 percentage points for the Texas Senate seat. The underdog Cruz won despite Dewhurst throwing about $11 million into his campaign.

If nothing else, it is comforting seeing an underdog win, as well as seeing a big spender lose.

Well, that's exciting news. I guess. Who's Ted Cruz?

Nevertheless, it's still discomforting to see idiots win.

Cruz hasn't been elected yet. He just won the GOP primary. The significance is that the TP backed Cruz defeated the GOP establishment's chosen RINO Dewhurst (even though Dewhurst was endorsed by Rick Perry).

The TP still has legs and is continuing efforts to reshape the Senate. There have been setbacks (Christine O'Donnell, Sharron Angle, Joe Miller, Dan Liljenquist), but the victories have gone something like this so far:

FL 2010 - RINO Mel Martinez retires. Marco Rubio forces GOP establishment pick Charlie Crist to run as an independent, Rubio prevails.

WI 2010 - Ron Johnson takes out Russ Feingold.

KY 2010 - Jim Bunning decides not to run. Rand Paul beats establishment pick Trey Grayson in GOP primary and goes on to win.

PA 2010 - RINO Arlen Specter reads the writing on the wall and jumps ship. Tea Partier Pat Toomey takes his spot.

2010 - RINO barnacle Bob Bennet loses GOP primary to tea partier Mike Lee who goes on to win.

IN 2012 - Uber-RINO Dick Lugar loses GOP primary to tea partier Richard Mourdock who will face Democrat Joe Donnelly in November.

2012 - Kay Bailey Hutchison retires from Senate to run for TX gov (and loses to Rick Perry). Ted Cruz wins primary runoff against GOP establishment pick David Dewhurst (despite Perry's endorsement for Dewhurst).

Wow! Maybe this means a Democrat has a chance in November!

Anne Richards. Jim Hightower. Increased Hispanic vote each year. It's happened, and can happen - especially if the Republican is a wingnut.

Lugar was almost certainly a "safe" Republican seat while Mourdock v. Donnelly is rated a toss up by RealClear Politics. There's only been one recent poll; GOP friendly Rassmussen has Mourdock ahead by only 2 points.

California would only elect her if she were a porn star. After all, they have their standards.

So what? Lugar lost by 20 points. His GOP constituents found him unacceptable. Out he goes.

    See Delaware 2010.

The facts are this; the TP positions you are so in love with are deeply unpopular in the country. The more the Republicans adopt them, the more likely it is that, in the not too long run, they will become a permanent minority party. The demographics are already tilting strongly against the GOP and the move to the ideological fringe you so strongly support is political suicide.

Then so be it. But I'll not be taking lectures on pragmatism from a Cynthia McKinney voter.

Cruz spent $1.4 million of his money on the race, so it's not exactly like he wasn't a "big spender" either.
