Having played a lot of 1400 players I now feel I have a criteria.

What you need?

1. Complete contempt for your opponent.

So what that he's played 400 games, the old scholars mate will sort him out.

2. Blind persistance.

What's a queen and a rook? I can still win.

3. Insane pettiness.

Must attack queen must attack queen. OH look a check!

Interesting that you should say that.

lol! That's a mighty tempting strategy.

Here are my winning strategies for reminaing under 1400....all real strategies reflected in my rating.

1. Play at work -- sneak in a few moves when bored at work and boss isn't around.

2. Join a bunch of tournaments at once raising your active games to 100

3. Fall for the pawn forking your bishop/knight for the 1,000th time

4. Know better than to allow the opponent's knight to fork your king and rook or queen -- fall for it anyway

5. Never analyze or study your own games

6. When you do occassionally read a chess book or article -- never break out a board and actually move pieces to let the understanding sink in

7. Keep telling yourself that chessbase isn't worth $150

Getting above 1400 doesn't require reading any chess books. Simply figure out why you lost the games you did, then try not to repeat those same mistakes.

For people below 1400 playing others of the same strength these mistakes are pretty elementary, so not blundering into opponents' knight forks and bishop skewers (among other basic tactical principles) are an almost surefire way to break the 1400 barrier.

Wait...I mean do the opposite of whatever I just said.

Staying below 1200 is easy. Just follow all the advice in this thread only do it even worse. So instead of blitz play bullet, make the 1st move that comes into your head no matter what.

I say take it to the next level, use an erogeniously bad engine to help you find the worst possible move!
